I did this painting in the tri-color style to reflect the old propaganda posters of the 1930's and 40's. I find the silhouette of the old Maxim and Browning machine guns oddly beautiful despite their sole purpose of literally being a killing machine.

You don't see water-c0oled general-purpose machine guns anymore. Der Germans used a different approach to get around the problem of rapidly overheating barrels on a belt-fed platform. The MG-42 was designed to use quick-change barrels. Extra barrels were carried by the loader along with extra belted ammo. Machine gunners operated in 2-man teams, a gunner and a loader. This is still how it's done. In fact, a variant of the MG-42, called the MG3, is still in use. It uses a different caliber, though: 7.62x51mm instead of the then-standard 7.92x57mm round used in the MG-42.
